High School Bands Bring Trophies Home
Congratulations to our high school bands on their placements at the Oct. 26 State Marching Band competitions. The Rock Hill High Band of Distinction placed third while the Northwestern Purple Regiment placed sixth. South Pointe’s Band of Thunder placed eighth in 3A competition.
School and Community Events
  • The Circle of Caring Breakfast, sponsored by The Palmetto School at the Children’s Attention Home, will be held on Sat., Nov. 2, at Oakland Baptist Church. 
  • The Fifth Annual Decadent Dreams Chocolate Festival & Fall Market will be held from 12:30-4:30 on Sun., Nov. 3, at the Baxter Hood Center at York Technical College. The festival provides safe, affordable family fun and holiday gift items. Proceeds will benefit Keystone Substance Abuse Services. Tickets will be available at the door for $15, but children age 5 and under will get in free.
  • The Rock Hill High Wrestling Team will be selling Boston Butts through Nov. 18 for $25. 
  • ParentSmart and the Family Resource Center, located at 410 E. Black Street, will begin on Nov. 8 taking applications for Toys for Happiness, the United Way’s program for Christmas assistance. 
Scholarship Opportunities
The Sodexo Foundation is offering scholarships through Dec. 5 to students ages 5-25 who are fighting hunger in America. Recipients will receive $5,000 for their own education and $5,000 for their hunger charity. For details, go to

Thank You, School Bus Transportation
We applaud our school bus drivers who strive everyday to transport 13,000 students safely to and from school. We’re also appreciative to Bernard Gill and his staff at the Transportation Complex for the sensitive work they do.

High School Bands Win Big at Upper-State
Congratulations to our bands which won top awards on Oct. 19 at the Upper-State Marching Championships. In 4A competition Rock Hill High, directed by Joe Gulledge, placed first, and Northwestern, directed by Mark Yost, placed second. In 3A competition, South Pointe, directed by James Turner, placed fourth.
State competition will be held this weekend, and we wish a successful outcome for each band.

Bands to Perform for Community

Our high school bands will present their half-time marching routines in a FREE performance Tues. evening, Oct. 29, in District Three Stadium. 

School and Community Events
  • The Northwestern Trojan Booster Club will sell BBQ plates at the ticket gates on the Constitution Blvd. side of the District Three Stadium prior to the Northwestern/York football game on Friday, October 25, beginning at 5:30 pm. For more information, call 803.554-2000 or 803.981-1989.
  • The City of Rock Hill will have an “open house” at its beautiful, new Operations Center at 757 S. Anderson Road on Sat., Oct. 26

School and Community Events
  • The Rock Hill High Choral and Theatre departments will present “The Little Mermaid” at 7:30 pm Thurs., Oct. 17, Fri., Oct. 18, and Sat., Oct. 19, in the school auditorium. Tickets are FREE for district employees with an ID and $10 for adults and $8 for students. 
  • The 901 Nightmare will have Student’s/Educator’s Night on Oct. 18 with some of the proceeds benefiting South Pointe High School. Any student or faculty member can present their school ID for discounted admission for the scare of their life. For more information, go to
  • The kick-off date for the “Keep America Beautiful” Recycling Bowl is October 21, and any school can compete. Last year’s state winners were our own Applied Technology Center, first, and Finley Road Elementary, second. For details on the competition, go to
  • The City of Rock Hill will have its Grand Opening of the RH Outdoor Center on Saturday, Oct. 26, on the Riverwalk Parkway.
  • The City of Rock Hill will host the “Old Town Zombie Crawl 5K/Fun Run and Zombie Survivor Party on Sat., Oct. 26. The event is primarily for students in middle school through college. This event needs volunteers, so those interested should call 803.524-5671.

Congratulations to . . .
  • the Back-the-Pack weekend food program on its 5th Anniversary. More than 3,000 students in need have been served in this program sponsored by the Rock Hill School District Foundation. 
  • Saluda Trail Middle School on receiving, for the second consecutive year, the Distinguished Arts Program Grant through the SC Dept. of Education  A team comprised of Myra AmlerMargie ClarkAngie CopleyPam JohnsonLauren Yon and a steering committee of parents, teachers and administrators worked diligently to submit the application at the end of May. The $18,000 grant will support and enhance arts education at Saluda Trail Middle School by providing materials, improving the arts environment and funding field studies and artists-in-residence. 
Update on Superintendent Search
In preparation for the district’s Superintendent search, School Board Chairman Jim Vining has directed consultants, Coleman, Lew + Associates, to meet with representatives of the district and community during the next month to gather information needed to enhance the recruitment process. The list includes:

School and Community Events
  • The Northwestern Trojan Baseball Team will host a golf tournament at Waterford Golf Club on Monday, October 14. See enclosed flyer.
  • The Children’s School at Sylvia Circle will have a Fall Festival on Sat., Oct. 19. 
News from Adult Education
  • The Literacy Center is looking for volunteers to tutor adults one hour a week who need help with their reading and math skills. All materials and books will be provided. If interested, contact Courtney at
  • The Literacy Center is now selling Anne Worsham Richardson “Ornament of Hope” prints and ornaments, the proceeds of which will support literacy in the Rock Hill community.

been selected to receive Artsonia’s Annual Leadership Award,
an honor extended to teachers from only 10 schools across the
U.S. This award honors teachers who go beyond the classroom
walls to encourage family and community involvement in Arts
Education and who use technology integration within the school
arts program.

¿Brooke Rice, chorus teacher at Rawlinson Road Middle School,
who, with her husband, will be contestants on the TV show, Wheel of Fortune, in a few weeks.  The show, however, will not air until December or January.
