Rock Hill Schools February Board Work Session To Be a Whopper!

The Rock Hill School Board Work Session will be held on Monday, February 8, 2010 in the Rawlinson Road Middle School Auditorium (starts @ 5:30 pm). A change in location from Northwestern High School. Northwestern High School will have a short presentation and there will be information on a reduction in bond interest rates. However, the bulk of the meeting will be devoted to the Superintendent's recommendation to meet an expected $10 million dollar shortage in revenue.

In a word, we're talking about a loss in jobs and benefits. A meeting that teachers and staff, not to mention the community (particularly parents), should attend to find out the what and why.

This is an example of what Dr. Silverman stated for a reason not to seek reelection - it simply is not fun anymore. A stressful test of the relationship between a Board and its Superintendent.

I would have done the process differently or had a different priority for cuts, but that is not my role. The Superintendent runs the schools and by policy, is responsible for submitting a balanced budget. I am dissapointed there are a lot of items on the list that I think have made Rock Hill Schools unique in public education (some award winning) - but as I told the Superintendent awhile back, we are in a desperate financial situation and everything should be on the table - including the table.
