Legislative Information

Online
SCSBA members can keep track of the latest legislative education bills by subject or bill number, obtain information on education issues, and find contact information for legislators in the Advocacy section of the SCSBA website.

Voices for Public Education Update
The Voices for Public Education Coalition, co-chaired by former Governor Richard “Dick” Riley and retired Chief Justice Ernest Finney, is continuing its advocacy efforts to defeat vouchers and tuition tax credit legislation. The coalition is working on several efforts aimed at informing the general public, specifically within African-American communities, of the real truth behind voucher and tuition tax credit proposals. Look for coalition members appearing in upcoming television and talk radio programs targeting African-Americans. Coalition members also are working to get out information in churches through publications and speaking events. Finally, coalition members are working to collaborate with faith-based leaders from across the state to join our efforts. The coalition currently has the support of faith-based organizations including the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina and the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church Board of Church and Society, and the organization P.A.S.T.O.R.S. Incorporated. The coalition needs your help to make sure we achieve our overall objective to keep public funds in public schools. SCSBA Partners For Children
SCSBA is working with Every Child Matters to help ensure children issues, including health and education, are a major focus during this year’s presidential election. Every Child Matters has organized two rallies to coincide with both the SC Republican Presidential Debate (Jan. 10th) and the SC Democratic Presidential Debate (Jan. 21st) to take advantage of the increased media attention. More than 200 children are expected to gather at 6:30 p.m. outside the Myrtle Beach Convention Center for the rallies, which will last about two hours. Additional adult volunteers are needed to help with the rally. Please email Duane Cooper if you are interested in participating.
